How Much Does a Dimmer Switch Cost to Install in Perth? (2026 Prices)
Quick answer: in Perth in 2026, replacing a light switch with an LED-compatible dimmer costs $160 to $220 supplied and installed. A designer plate — Clipsal Iconic or Saturn, or the Zen and Pro ranges — takes it to $220 to $300, and a smart dimmer you can control from your phone is $250 to $400. Each dimmer is priced individually, so three dimmers cost three times one.

The dimmer question in 2026 is almost never about the dimmer — it's about the LEDs. A dimmer that worked perfectly on halogens makes LED downlights flicker, buzz or refuse to go below 40%, and the fix is a trailing-edge dimmer matched to the lights, not a different globe. This guide gives you the 2026 Perth prices, explains which dimmer works with which lights, what's done on the day, and the rules.

Dimmer switch costs in Perth in 2026
| Job | Typical Perth price (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Replace a switch with an LED trailing-edge dimmer | $160 – $220 | Standard Clipsal plate; matched to the lights on the circuit |
| Designer plate with dimmer (Iconic, Saturn Zen, Pro) | $220 – $300 | Plate and mech; colours and finishes to match the room |
| Smart dimmer (Clipsal Wiser, Zimi, app or voice controlled) | $250 – $400 | Some need a neutral at the switch; we check first |
| Two-way dimming (dim from two switches) | +$60 – $150 | Needs a compatible dimmer pair or a smart module |
| Fix a flickering or buzzing dimmer | $160 – $300 | Usually a leading-edge dimmer on LEDs; replaced with the right one |
| Dimmable LED downlights to suit | $75 – $110 each | See our downlight cost guide |
A quality trailing-edge dimmer mech is $40–$80 at trade and a designer plate $30–$90 on top; smart dimmers are $80–$200. Labour is the swap, the test with the actual lights, and the paperwork.

Why LEDs flicker on a dimmer (and how to stop it)
- Leading-edge vs trailing-edge. Old dimmers (leading-edge, made for halogens and incandescents) chop the start of the AC wave, which LED drivers hate — flicker, buzz, a narrow dimming range. Trailing-edge dimmers chop the end of the wave and are what LEDs need.
- Minimum load. Many dimmers need a minimum wattage to work. Four 8 W downlights (32 W) can be below an old dimmer's minimum; modern LED dimmers work down to a few watts.
- Non-dimmable LEDs. Plenty of downlights and globes aren't dimmable at all. Check the box; "dimmable" has to be printed on it.
- Compatibility. Even good dimmers and good LEDs don't always get on. We test the actual lights on the dimmer before we leave, and Clipsal publishes compatibility lists for its dimmers.
- Mixed fittings. A pendant with an incandescent globe and LED downlights on one dimmer will misbehave; separate circuits or matching lamps fix it.

What's actually done on the day
- Check the lights. Type, number and total wattage on the circuit, and whether they're dimmable.
- Choose the dimmer. Trailing-edge LED dimmer rated for the load; a two-way or smart module where needed; a plate to match the room.
- Isolate the lighting circuit and confirm RCD protection.
- Fit the dimmer in place of the switch mech, in the existing plate or a new one.
- Set the range. Most LED dimmers have a minimum-brightness adjustment so the lights don't drop out at the bottom; we set it with the lights on.
- Test and certify. Full range, no flicker, no buzz; your Electrical Safety Certificate follows.
A single dimmer takes about 30–45 minutes; a smart dimmer with app setup about an hour.
Smart dimmers and switches
If you want the lights on your phone or a voice assistant, a smart dimmer at the switch is usually a better answer than smart globes — the wall switch keeps working, guests understand it, and one module controls every light on the circuit. Common ranges: Clipsal Wiser (Iconic plates), Zimi Powermesh, and Wi-Fi dimmers that work with Google Home, Alexa and Apple Home. Some need a neutral wire at the switch, which older Perth switch points don't have; we check before you buy.
The WA rules that apply
- Licensed contractor only. Replacing a switch mech with a dimmer is electrical work for a licensed electrical contractor (our licence is EC15449) — even though it looks like a five-minute job.
- Rated for the load. The dimmer must be rated for the wattage and the type of lights under the manufacturer's instructions.
- RCD protection on lighting circuits for altered work under AS/NZS 3000:2018.
- Electrical Safety Certificate for the work, within 28 days.
What pushes the price up (or down)
- The plate. Standard, designer or smart is the main difference.
- Two-way switching needs compatible gear.
- Neutral at the switch for some smart dimmers — running one is extra.
- Non-dimmable lights may need replacing to get the result you want.
How Web X quotes dimmers

We install dimmers across the Perth metro — Subiaco, Nedlands, Applecross, Scarborough, Joondalup, Canning Vale and everywhere between.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Dim the rooms that need it — living areas and bedrooms; hallways and laundries rarely do.
- Check your LEDs are dimmable before buying a dimmer.
- Standard plates in bedrooms, designer in living areas if the budget is tight.
- Bundle with a downlight upgrade — new dimmable LEDs and the right dimmer in one visit means no compatibility surprises.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to install a dimmer switch in Perth?
About $160–$220 to replace a switch with an LED-compatible dimmer, $220–$300 for a designer plate, and $250–$400 for a smart dimmer, supplied, installed and tested with your lights.
Can I install a dimmer switch myself?
No. In WA, replacing a switch mech is licensed electrical work. It's also the job where the wrong dimmer on LEDs causes flicker and buzz, which is why we test it with your actual lights.
Why do my LED lights flicker on the dimmer?
Almost always an old leading-edge dimmer made for halogens, a minimum-load problem, or non-dimmable LEDs. A trailing-edge LED dimmer matched to the lights fixes it; replacing non-dimmable fittings fixes the rest.
Do all LED lights work with dimmers?
No. Only fittings and globes marked "dimmable" will, and even then the dimmer and the lights need to be compatible. We work from the manufacturers' compatibility lists and test before we leave.
Can I dim the lights from two switches?
Yes, with a two-way dimmer pair or a smart module. It's an extra $60–$150 over a single dimmer.
Are smart dimmers worth it?
If you want app, schedule or voice control, a smart dimmer at the switch beats smart globes — the wall switch still works and one module runs the whole circuit. Some need a neutral at the switch, which we check first.
How long does it take?
About 30–45 minutes for a standard dimmer, an hour for a smart dimmer with app setup, and a morning for a whole house.
