Quick answer: in Perth in 2026 we replace a standard light switch or power point for $160 supplied and installed ($145 plus GST). Cracked, yellowed, sticky or scorched switches are the most common small job in Perth homes, and the most common "while you're here". The good news is it's a fixed price per switch, not an hourly rate, so you know the total before we start — and a room or a whole house can be done in one visit. This guide covers the 2026 prices for switches and power points, the ranges people choose, what's done, and why the scorched one needs a look today.

Which switches and power points?
- Standard. Clipsal's standard white range — the one in most Perth homes. Cheap, reliable, and the mechs are available everywhere.
- Designer. Clipsal Iconic (slim, with swappable colour skins), Saturn Zen and Saturn Pro (matt and glass finishes), and equivalents from Hager and HPM. The look of a renovated home for $40–$140 more per switch.
- Smart. Clipsal Wiser, Zimi Powermesh and Wi-Fi switches that work with Google, Alexa and Apple Home. The wall switch keeps working for everyone; the app adds schedules and voice control. Some models need a neutral at the switch point, which older homes don't have — we check first.
- Power points. Double GPOs as standard; USB-A/USB-C versions for benches and bedsides; 15 A points for caravans and workshops; weatherproof outdoor points.
- Brands. Clipsal, Hager and HPM are the common ones in Perth homes.

What's actually done on the day
- Isolate the circuit — and check for the things we find behind old switches: scorched terminals, two-wire lighting with no earth, and DIY joins.
- Replace the mech and plate, terminate properly, and fit the plate square (it's the detail people notice).
- Power points: the same, plus an earth check and polarity test at every point.
- New positions: a cable run from the nearest suitable circuit through the cavity or roof space, a new mounting bracket, and patching left ready for paint on solid walls.
- Test and certify. Every switch and point tested; your Electrical Safety Certificate follows.
A single switch takes about 20 minutes on site; a whole 3×1 house — say 25 switches and points — is most of a day.
When a switch or point needs replacing now
- Scorch marks, a burning smell or heat. A loose termination arcing behind the plate. Stop using it and call today.
- Sparks when you plug in. A tiny spark is normal on some appliances; a crack and a flash is worn contacts.
- Loose plugs. Worn power points that no longer grip a plug overheat under load — kettles and heaters especially.
- Buzzing dimmers. Usually the wrong dimmer for LEDs; see the dimmer guide.
- Cracked or yellowed plates. Cosmetic, but cracks expose live parts and children find them.
- Bakelite switches in pre-1970 homes: they still work, but the wiring behind them is the same age.
The WA rules that apply
- Licensed contractor only. Replacing a switch or power point is electrical work for a licensed electrical contractor (our licence is EC15449). It's illegal to DIY in WA, and it's cheap to have done properly.
- RCD protection. New points and altered circuits must be RCD-protected under AS/NZS 3000:2018; two RCDs are required before a home is sold or rented.
- Earthing. Metal plates and fittings need an earth; old two-wire lighting circuits can't provide one, which we'll tell you about before fitting a metal-look plate.
- Outdoor points need IP-rated enclosures.
- Electrical Safety Certificate for the work, within 28 days.
What pushes the price up (or down)
- Quantity. A fixed $160 per standard switch or point, so the total is simply the count.
- Range. Standard, designer or smart.
- New positions — the cable run is the cost, and solid walls need patching.
- What's behind the plate. Scorched cable or a missing earth has to be dealt with.
- Two-way switching and smart modules needing a neutral.

- Standard plates in cupboards and laundries, designer where you look at them.
- Bundle with a dimmer, a USB point or a sensor light in the same visit.
- Buy the plates yourself if you like — we'll fit any Australian-certified range, though our trade price is usually close to retail.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a light switch in Perth?
$160 for each standard switch or power point supplied and installed ($145 plus GST), $200–$300 for designer plates and $250–$400 for smart switches.
Can I replace a light switch myself?
No — in WA it's licensed electrical work, even for a like-for-like swap. It's also one of the cheapest jobs an electrician does.
How much does a new power point cost?
$160 to replace one, $250–$400 for a new point in a new position with a cable run, and $220–$350 for a weatherproof outdoor point. USB-C points are $190–$230.
How long does it take?
About 20 minutes per switch on site; a whole 3×1 home, around 25 switches and points, is most of a day. New positions take an hour or so each.
Do you charge by the hour?
No. Every job is a fixed price per switch or point, agreed before we start, with no call-out fee.
What is two-way switching?
Controlling one light from two switches — the ends of a hallway, top and bottom of stairs, or the bedroom door and the bedside. Adding it is $300–$500 including the second switch and the cable between them.
Are smart switches worth it?
If you want schedules, app or voice control, a smart switch is better than smart globes because the wall switch still works. Some need a neutral at the switch, which we check before you buy.
