How Much Does Circuit Breaker Replacement Cost in Perth? (2026 Prices)

Quick answer: in Perth in 2026, replacing a faulty circuit breaker costs $160 to $220 supplied and installed. Replacing it with an RCBO — a breaker with a built-in safety switch — is $200 to $300, a main switch $250 to $400, and each extra breaker on the same visit $90 to $150. If the board still has ceramic fuses, breakers can't be swapped in one at a time; that's a switchboard upgrade at $1,800–$2,800.

A circuit breaker that won't reset, trips with nothing plugged in, or feels warm is one of the most common call-outs we get, and the fix is usually cheap — as long as the breaker is actually the problem. Half the "faulty breakers" we're called to are doing their job on a faulty circuit. This guide covers what replacement costs in Perth in 2026, how to tell a bad breaker from a bad circuit, what's done on the day, and when an RCBO or a whole new board is the better spend.

Circuit breaker replacement costs in Perth in 2026

JobTypical Perth price (2026)Notes
Replace one circuit breaker (MCB), like for like$160 – $220Clipsal, Hager or NHP; tested and labelled
Replace a breaker with an RCBO$200 – $300Adds safety-switch protection to that circuit
Each additional breaker, same visit+$90 – $150Common when a board's breakers are all the same age
Replace the main switch$250 – $400Often needed for an EV charger connection — Western Power requires a circuit-breaker main switch
Older plug-in or bolt-on breaker (obsolete type)$220 – $350Sourcing and adapting; sometimes the trigger for an upgrade
Fault finding when the breaker trips with everything off$150 – $300Fixed price; the fault is found before anything is replaced
Switchboard upgrade (ceramic fuses, or a board full of failing gear)$1,800 – $2,800RCBO on every circuit, surge protection, new enclosure — full guide

A quality breaker is $15–$40 at trade, an RCBO $60–$110; the price is the electrician's time to isolate the board, confirm the fault, fit and test. Unbranded online breakers aren't rated for the fault currents on Western Power's network and don't fit most Perth boards properly — we fit Clipsal, Hager and NHP.

Faulty breaker, or faulty circuit?

Before you pay to replace anything, it's worth knowing what a bad breaker looks like versus a good breaker on a bad circuit.

  • Probably the breaker: it won't stay on even with every appliance on that circuit unplugged; the toggle feels loose or won't click; it's warm or discoloured with nothing running; it trips at a fraction of its rating (a 16 A breaker on a couple of lights).
  • Probably the circuit: it trips when a particular appliance runs (oven, aircon, kettle, welder); it trips when the outdoor point gets wet; it trips after a storm; it's an RCD that trips rather than a breaker — RCDs trip on earth leakage, which is usually an appliance or moisture, not the device.
  • Probably overload: it trips when several things run together on one circuit — the kitchen circuit with the kettle, toaster and microwave going. The fix is a new circuit, not a bigger breaker (which is dangerous and illegal).

Our guide to why a circuit breaker keeps tripping walks through the checks. If it still trips with everything unplugged, that's fault finding, quoted as a fixed price.

What's actually done on the day

  1. Confirm the fault. The circuit is tested with the breaker isolated — insulation resistance, and a check of the load — so we replace a breaker only when the breaker is the problem.
  2. Isolate the board. Main switch off; the failed breaker unclipped from the DIN rail (or unbolted on older boards).
  3. Fit the replacement — same rating and curve as the circuit requires, or an RCBO if you've chosen to add safety-switch protection to that circuit.
  4. Check the connections. Loose or overheated terminals are a common cause of breaker failure; we re-terminate and check the neighbours while the board is open.
  5. Test and label. Trip test (and RCD trip time on an RCBO), polarity and earth checks on the circuit, updated label on the board. Your Electrical Safety Certificate follows.

A straightforward replacement takes about 45 minutes; with fault finding, one to two hours.

MCB, RCD, RCBO and main switch: what's what

  • Circuit breaker (MCB). Protects the cable from overload and short circuit. Trips on too much current. Rated 10, 16, 20, 32 A and so on to match the cable.
  • RCD (safety switch). Protects people. Trips on current leaking to earth — 30 mA in a fraction of a second. WA requires at least two on any home sold or rented. See our RCD cost guide.
  • RCBO. Both in one, per circuit. When a breaker fails, replacing it with an RCBO is the cheap moment to add safety-switch protection to that circuit — and it's what the Wiring Rules push new work towards.
  • Main switch. Isolates the whole board. Older homes often have a plain switch or a fuse; Western Power requires a circuit-breaker main switch before an EV charger is connected, which is why main switch replacements have become common.
  • Surge protection device (SPD). Not a breaker, but it lives in the board and protects everything with a circuit board from spikes. Cheap to add while the board is open.

The WA rules that apply

  • Licensed contractor only. Replacing a breaker is switchboard work for a licensed electrical contractor (our licence is EC15449). Hardware-store breakers fitted by an owner are the cause of a lot of the boards we replace.
  • Correct rating. The breaker must match the cable it protects under AS/NZS 3000:2018. "Upgrading" a 16 A breaker to 20 A because it keeps tripping is how cables catch fire.
  • RCD protection. Any new or altered circuit must be RCD-protected; replacing a breaker with an RCBO satisfies that for the circuit.
  • Electrical Safety Certificate for the work, within 28 days.

What pushes the price up (or down)

  • Board type. DIN-rail boards are a clip-in job; obsolete plug-in and bolt-on types take sourcing and adapting.
  • Number of breakers. The first carries the visit; the rest are cheap.
  • RCBO vs MCB. A little more for the device, a lot more protection.
  • Fault finding. If the circuit is the problem, that's found first.
  • What we find in the board. Heat damage, loose terminals or a corroded busbar can turn a breaker swap into an upgrade — we tell you before doing anything extra.

How Web X quotes breaker work

Send a photo of the open switchboard and tell us which breaker and what it does — that's usually enough for a fixed price the same day.

  • Fixed price before we start, $0 call-out fee.
  • Same-day for a board with a circuit down where we can.
  • Fault confirmed before anything is replaced; tested and certified after.
  • Licensed electrical contractor EC15449, 300+ five-star Google reviews. See our circuit breaker and RCD and circuit breaker service pages.

We work on switchboards across the Perth metro — Dianella, Bayswater, Fremantle, Armadale, Joondalup, Midland and everywhere between.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Unplug everything on the circuit and try the reset before calling; if it holds, it's an appliance, not the breaker.
  • Replace with an RCBO while it's open — the cheapest way to add a safety switch to that circuit.
  • Do the tired ones together. Breakers from the same batch fail around the same time.
  • If the board is old, upgrade it once rather than replacing obsolete breakers one at a time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a circuit breaker in Perth?

About $160–$220 for a like-for-like breaker, $200–$300 to replace it with an RCBO, and $250–$400 for a main switch, all supplied, installed, tested and certified.

Can I replace a circuit breaker myself?

No. In WA it's licensed electrical work, and the wrong rating or a loose termination in a switchboard is a fire risk. It's also one of the cheapest jobs an electrician does.

How do I know if a circuit breaker is faulty?

If it won't stay on with everything on the circuit unplugged, feels loose, or is warm or discoloured with nothing running, the breaker is likely the problem. If it trips only when a particular appliance runs, or when it rains, the circuit or the appliance is.

What's the difference between a circuit breaker and a safety switch?

A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuits. A safety switch (RCD) protects people by tripping on earth leakage. An RCBO does both in one unit for a single circuit.

Should I replace a breaker with an RCBO?

Usually, yes. It costs about $40–$80 more than a plain breaker and adds safety-switch protection to that circuit, which the current Wiring Rules require for new work anyway.

Can you replace a ceramic fuse with a circuit breaker?

Not one at a time — fuse boards don't take modern breakers. The answer is a switchboard upgrade, which replaces every fuse with an RCBO and adds surge protection.

Why does my breaker trip when it rains?

Moisture getting into an outdoor power point, garden light, reticulation controller or a damaged cable. That's a circuit fault, not a breaker fault, and we find it as a fixed-price job.
