How Much Does Data Point Installation Cost in Perth? (2026 Prices)
Quick answer: in Perth in 2026 a Cat6 data point costs $250 to $390 installed, terminated and tested, and each additional point on the same visit is $150 to $250. A ceiling-mounted Wi-Fi access point on its own data cable is $300 to $450 plus the unit, and a small home network cabinet with a patch panel for six to eight points is $1,500 to $2,500 all up.
Our own Perth prices, including GST. Fixed price before we start, $0 call-out fee. Cabling by a registered cabler, every point tested and labelled.
Wi-Fi is fine for phones; it's the wrong tool for a TV that buffers, a work-from-home video call that drops, a games console, or a mesh system whose nodes talk to each other over the air. A wired data point fixes those for good, and in a Perth cavity-brick home it's a quicker job than people expect. This guide covers what data points cost in 2026, what's done, Cat6 versus Cat6A, Wi-Fi access points, and the rules.

Count the points and pick the options. The range is what we'd expect to quote before a look; the fixed price follows a photo of where the router lives and the rooms you want wired.
Data point installation costs in Perth in 2026
| Job | Typical Perth price (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First Cat6 data point | $250 – $390 | Cable from the router through the roof space, wall plate, terminated and tested |
| Each additional data point, same visit | $150 – $250 | Study, TV, bedrooms, gaming |
| Cat6A upgrade | +$30 – $70 per point | 10-gigabit capable; shielded cable and jacks |
| Ceiling Wi-Fi access point on its own cable | $300 – $450 + unit | Ubiquiti, TP-Link Omada or similar; PoE from the switch |
| Home network cabinet, patch panel and switch, 6–8 points | $1,500 – $2,500 | The tidy version: everything in one cabinet in the garage or study |
| Cable from the NBN box to a better router spot | $150 – $300 | So the router can live in the study or a cabinet; the NBN box stays put |
| Data behind a wall-mounted TV (with power and TV point) | $450 – $650 | One recessed plate — see our TV point guide |
| Office data points (per point, 20+) | $180 – $280 | To a patch panel; see our office fit-out guide |

Where data points earn their keep
- The TV. 4K streaming is the biggest single Wi-Fi load in most homes; a wired point ends the buffering.
- The study. Video calls drop on Wi-Fi when the microwave or the neighbour's network gets busy; a wired laptop dock doesn't.
- Gaming. Consoles and PCs on a cable have lower, steadier latency.
- Mesh Wi-Fi. Mesh nodes with a wired backhaul are dramatically faster than nodes talking to each other over the air — one data point per node.
- Ceiling access points. A single ceiling-mounted access point in the middle of the house usually beats a router shoved in a corner cupboard by the NBN box.
- Security cameras, solar inverters, EV chargers and smart home hubs all behave better on a cable.

What's actually done on the day
- Plan the runs. Where the router or cabinet lives, which rooms need a point, and the route through the roof space and cavities.
- Run Cat6 from each point back to the router or patch panel — solid-core, one continuous run per point, kept clear of mains cables in the roof.
- Terminate on RJ45 wall plates (single or double) and at the patch panel or a labelled tail at the router.
- Fit the cabinet where you've chosen one: patch panel, gigabit switch, power point, and the router moved into it.
- Test every point with a cable tester — wiremap and length — and label both ends.
- Connect and check. Each point is patched to the router or a switch and checked with a device before we leave.
A single point takes about an hour; four points and a cabinet, half a day.
Cat6, Cat6A or fibre?
- Cat6 runs gigabit over the lengths in any house and 10 gigabit over short runs. It's the right answer for nearly every home in 2026.
- Cat6A is shielded and thicker, runs 10 gigabit over full lengths, and suits offices, studios and anyone future-proofing a new build. A little more per point.
- Fibre between buildings — a house and a shed office, or across a large block — where the run is long or lightning is a concern.
- Wi-Fi 6 and 7 still need cable: the access points hang off data points, and the more wired devices, the better the Wi-Fi is for the rest.
The WA rules that apply
- Registered cabler. Under ACMA's cabling rules, data and phone cabling in a home has to be done by a registered cabler — an electrical licence alone doesn't cover it. We're registered for data cabling as well as licensed for electrical work.
- Separation from mains. Data cable in the roof is kept clear of 240 V wiring under the cabling standards, which matters for both safety and interference.
- The power points for cabinets and access points are electrical work for a licensed electrical contractor (our licence is EC15449).
- The NBN box — on FTTP and HFC connections it's nbn's equipment and only nbn-approved technicians can move it, arranged through your internet provider. A data cable from where it is to where you want the router is the usual fix.
- Electrical Safety Certificate for any mains work, within 28 days.
What pushes the price up (or down)
- Number of points. The first carries the visit; the rest are $150–$250.
- Roof and wall access. Two-storey ground floors and solid walls cost more.
- Distance and route back to the router.
- Cabinet or no cabinet. A patch panel and switch is the tidy, expandable option and adds $600–$1,200.
- Cat6A adds a little per point.
- Access points and hardware — Ubiquiti and TP-Link Omada are the common choices; the unit is extra.
How Web X quotes data points
Send a photo of where the router and NBN box are, tell us which rooms you want wired, and whether you'd like a cabinet — that's usually enough for a fixed price.
- Fixed price before we start, $0 call-out fee.
- Most homes done in a single visit.
- Cat6 solid-core, tested and labelled at both ends, checked with a device before we leave.
- Licensed electrical contractor EC15449, 300+ five-star Google reviews. See our data and TV points and ethernet cabling pages.
We install data points across the Perth metro — Joondalup, Subiaco, Canning Vale, Piara Waters, Baldivis, Ellenbrook and everywhere between.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Wire everything at once — the second and later points are much cheaper than the first.
- Put the router where the cables are easy — a study cupboard or the garage — rather than the NBN box's original spot.
- Skip the cabinet for one or two points; a small switch by the router is fine.
- Do it during a renovation or with a TV wall mount or downlight job while the roof space is open.
- Choose Cat6 unless you know you need 6A.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a data point cost in Perth?
$250–$390 for the first Cat6 point installed, terminated and tested, and $150–$250 for each additional point on the same visit. A cabinet with a patch panel and switch for six to eight points is $1,500–$2,500 all up.
Do I need an electrician for data points?
Data cabling isn't covered by an electrical licence — under ACMA's cabling rules it has to be done by a registered cabler. Any new power points for a network cabinet or access points are electrical work for a licensed electrical contractor. We hold both — the cabling registration and electrical contractor licence EC15449 — so one visit covers the cabling and any power points.
Is a wired data point really faster than Wi-Fi?
For a TV, a work laptop or a console, yes — steadier speed, lower latency and no dropouts when the microwave runs. It also makes the Wi-Fi better for everything else.
Cat6 or Cat6A?
Cat6 for nearly every home: gigabit over any household length and 10 gigabit over short runs. Cat6A for offices, studios and new builds where you want 10 gigabit everywhere.
How long does data point installation take?
About an hour for a single point with roof access, and half a day for four points and a cabinet.
Can the NBN box be moved?
On FTTP and HFC connections the NBN box belongs to nbn and only nbn-approved technicians can move it — you arrange that through your internet provider. The cheaper fix is usually a data cable from where the box is to wherever the router should live, like the study, the garage or a network cabinet: $150–$300 on top of the points.
Will the new points work with my router?
Yes. Each point is patched to your router or a switch beside it and checked with a device before we leave, and every cable is labelled at both ends. If you're adding access points or mesh nodes, tell us the model when you book so the cabling suits them.
