How Much Does Cooktop Installation Cost in Perth? (2026 Prices)

Quick answer: in Perth in 2026, replacing an electric or induction cooktop like for like — the existing circuit and isolator are adequate — costs $250 to $350. Upgrading from a ceramic or gas cooktop to induction usually needs a new 32 A circuit from the switchboard, which takes the job to $600 to $900. Add $150 to $250 if a cooktop isolating switch has to be fitted, and a switchboard upgrade if the board can't take the load. The cooktop itself is extra.

Our own Perth prices, including GST and the Electrical Safety Certificate. Fixed price before we start, $0 call-out fee.

Induction has taken over Perth kitchens, and the electrical side is where the surprises live: a 60 cm induction cooktop draws up to 7.4 kW, a 90 cm one up to 11 kW, and the 20 A circuit that ran the old ceramic hob won't carry it. Below is what each cooktop job costs in 2026, what's actually done, the isolating-switch rule that catches renovators out, and how gas fits in.

Why induction usually means a new circuit

A ceramic or coil cooktop in a 1990s–2000s Perth kitchen typically runs on a 20 A circuit with 4 mm² cable, sometimes shared with the oven. Induction cooktops are rated higher: most 60 cm models draw up to 7.2–7.4 kW (a 32 A circuit), and 80–90 cm models up to 11 kW, which is a 32 A circuit with power management or a three-phase connection. The manufacturer's installation sheet states the required circuit, and the Wiring Rules require the circuit to match. Plugging an 11 kW cooktop into a 20 A circuit trips the breaker on the first stir-fry, or worse, doesn't trip and cooks the cable.

Many induction cooktops offer a "power limit" setting that caps them at 3.6 kW or 7.4 kW so they can run on a smaller circuit. We'll tell you whether that's a sensible option for your kitchen or whether the new circuit is the right fix.

What's actually done on the day

  1. Check the circuit and the board. Cable size, breaker rating, RCD protection and spare ways against the cooktop's installation sheet.
  2. Isolate. Power off at the board; the old cooktop disconnected and lifted out (the cabinet maker or you handle any benchtop cut-out change — a 60 cm induction usually matches a 60 cm ceramic hole, but not always).
  3. Run a new circuit if needed. 6 mm² cable from the switchboard to the kitchen, a 32 A RCBO at the board.
  4. Fit or check the isolating switch. A cooktop isolator within reach and not directly above the hob, as the Wiring Rules require.
  5. Connect the cooktop. Hard-wired to the manufacturer's terminals, with the power-limit setting configured if used.
  6. Test and certify. Earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, RCD trip; then every zone tested at full power. Your Electrical Safety Certificate follows.

A like-for-like swap takes about an hour; a new circuit two to four hours depending on the run to the board.

Gas cooktops: who does what

We're electricians, not gas fitters, so a gas cooktop installation is split: the gas fitter connects or caps the gas line and does the gas compliance paperwork, and we handle the electrical side — the 10 A point for the ignition, and the new circuit if you're switching from gas to induction. If you're going gas-to-induction, book the gas fitter to cap the line the same day; it's a 30-minute job for them and the kitchen isn't out of action for long.

The WA rules that apply

  • Licensed contractor only. Connecting a hard-wired cooktop is electrical work for a licensed electrical contractor (our licence is EC15449). Appliance retailers' "installers" must hold the same licence.
  • Circuit sized to the appliance under AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the manufacturer's instructions, with RCD protection on the circuit.
  • Isolating switch. Cooking appliances need a switch to isolate them, within reach of the cooktop and not directly above it. Renovators often find the old isolator is behind the new rangehood — it has to move.
  • Gas work is a licensed gas fitter's job under WA's gas regulations, with its own compliance certificate.
  • Electrical Safety Certificate for the electrical work, within 28 days.

What pushes the price up (or down)

  • The circuit. Reusing an adequate one is the cheap job; a new 32 A run from the board is the main cost.
  • Distance to the switchboard. A kitchen on the far side of a two-storey home is a long run.
  • The isolator. Adding or moving one adds a switch and some cable.
  • The board. Spare way, extension, or upgrade.
  • Three-phase cooktops — only if you already have three-phase, or want it.
  • Timing with the renovation. Rough-in while the walls are open is cheaper than chasing afterwards.

How Web X quotes a cooktop install

Send us the cooktop model (or a photo of the installation sheet), a photo of the existing isolator and one of the switchboard — that's usually enough for a fixed price the same day.

  • Fixed price before we start, $0 call-out fee.
  • Like-for-like swaps often same or next day; new circuits within the week.
  • Circuit, isolator, connection, testing and the Electrical Safety Certificate included.
  • Licensed electrical contractor EC15449, 300+ five-star Google reviews. See our cooktop installation and oven and hotplate pages.

We connect cooktops across the Perth metro — Subiaco, Applecross, Dianella, Canning Vale, Joondalup, Ellenbrook and everywhere between.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Check the circuit before you buy. Send us the model; we'll tell you whether your circuit will run it or a power-limited setting will do.
  • Match the cut-out. A 60 cm-for-60 cm swap avoids benchtop work.
  • Do the oven at the same time if it's due — one visit, and the circuits can be planned together.
  • Book the gas fitter for the same day on a gas-to-induction swap.
  • Rough in during the renovation, not after the splashback goes on.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install an induction cooktop in Perth?

About $250–$350 if the existing circuit and isolator are adequate, or $600–$900 when a new 32 A circuit is needed, which is most upgrades from ceramic or gas. The cooktop itself is extra.

Do I need an electrician to install a cooktop?

Yes. A hard-wired cooktop must be connected by a licensed electrical contractor in WA, and you receive an Electrical Safety Certificate for the work. Gas connections need a licensed gas fitter.

Can an induction cooktop run on my existing circuit?

Sometimes. Many 60 cm models can be power-limited to 7.4 kW or less, and a sound 32 A circuit will run most of them. A 20 A circuit from an old ceramic hob usually won't, and 90 cm models often need 32 A or three-phase. Send us the model and we'll check.

What is a cooktop isolating switch and do I need one?

A switch that cuts power to the cooktop, required by the Wiring Rules within reach of the hob and not directly above it. Old kitchens often have one behind the new rangehood or none at all — it's $150–$250 to add or move.

How long does cooktop installation take?

About an hour for a like-for-like swap; two to four hours if a new circuit has to be run from the switchboard.

Can you install a gas cooktop?

We do the electrical side — the ignition power point and any circuit changes — and a licensed gas fitter connects the gas. For gas-to-induction, we run the new circuit and the gas fitter caps the line.

Does the switchboard need upgrading for induction?

Only if it's full or still has ceramic fuses. A modern board with a spare way takes a 32 A RCBO without fuss; a full board gets a small extension; a fuse board needs an upgrade before any new circuit.
